Antiquated traffic signals causing congestion in Baltimore

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — City transportation officials say it will take tens of millions of dollars in upgrades to fix an antiquated network of traffic signals that is contributing to congestion in downtown Baltimore and other busy neighborhoods. The Baltimore Sun reports that more than $20 million has been set aside in next year’s capital budget for system upgrades. But officials say those upgrades would resolve only a portion of the system’s deficiencies. Fewer than a third of the city’s 1,300 electronic traffic signals are connected to its downtown transportation command center in a way that allows for immediate remote adjustments after accidents and other traffic problems. Officials say at least $30 million is needed to overhaul signal connections and other technological features. An even larger amount would be needed for a broader overhaul. US 50 over Severn River expands to 4 lanes

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — There’s some good news this Monday for commuters along U.S. Route 50 east of Annapolis, Maryland. The eastbound lanes of Route 50 over the Severn River expanded from three lanes to four Monday morning. This comes a month ahead of schedule. The Severn River bridge has become the biggest traffic bottleneck along Route 50 for anyone heading into Arnold and beyond to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The state reduced the width of each lane of traffic on the bridge from 12 feet to 11 feet, and then reduced the space between the eastbound and westbound spans of the bridge. It already has generated opposition by some local residents ahead of Tuesday’s public hearing. The proposal calls for the county to give the money to the Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, a Washington-based nonprofit. The money would be used to hire lawyers for people from households with incomes at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, or with a financial hardship. In a 2-1 ruling, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled this month that the law is unconstitutional because it forces manufacturers and wholesalers to act in accordance with Maryland law outside of Maryland, burdening interstate commerce. Attorney General Brian Frosh filed on Friday asked for a rehearing by all the judges on the appellate court, saying the panel’s ruling conflicts with prior court rulings, and that the case involves questions of “exceptional importance.” The Maryland law enabled the attorney general to sue makers of off-patent or generic drugs for price increases that state officials consider to be “unconscionable.” The post Maryland AG presses fight over drug price goug

Appeals court nixes challenge to Baltimore “rain tax”

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland appeals court has rejected a Baltimore synagogue’s challenge to a stormwater management levy on city property owners. The Court of Special Appeals on Friday upheld a circuit judge’s ruling that the fee does not violate the synagogue’s right to free exercise of religion. The court said the city acted within its authority under a state enabling law when it enacted the fee, although the court agreed with Shaarei Tfiloh Congregation that the fee is actually a tax because its primary purpose is to raise revenue. But the court said the fee is an excise tax, not a property tax, and does not carry religious implications. Immigrant rights group appeals DACA ruling in Maryland

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — An immigrant-rights group is appealing a ruling from a federal judge in Maryland favoring the Trump administration’s plans to end a program deferring deportation of young immigrants. CASA de Maryland on Friday filed notice of its appeal to Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia. Last month Judge Roger Titus ruled the Trump administration is within its rights to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which extended protections for immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Titus wrote that he wished he could arrive at a different conclusion, and expressed hope that “Congress and the President will finally get their job done” and extend protections. Other federal judges have blocked the Trump administration from ending the program, and those rulings remain in place. The post Immigrant rights group appeals DACA ruling in Mary

‘This should outage you’: Report says Montgomery Co. economy in trouble

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ROCKVILLE, Md. — As the race for Montgomery County executive heats up, a new report paints an alarming picture of the economic future of Maryland’s most affluent county. The report, commissioned by the nonpartisan group Empower Montgomery, said the county has been plagued by “extraordinarily soft” job growth in recent years and faces “an increasingly risky economic and fiscal environment.” The report was presented at a forum organized by the Montgomery County Business Roundtable, and the six Democrats running for county executive were invited to hear its findings and discuss some of the issues raised. “This should outrage you,” a fiery Maryland State Del. Bill Frick said at the forum. “This should make you angry. Instead of handing out bagels and muffins they should have been handing out pitchforks and torches.” Titled “ The Coming Storm: How Years of Economic Underperformance are Catching up with Mo

Baltimore school budget to cut estimated $5.5M from charters

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore school system has unveiled its proposed budget, which cuts nearly $5.5 million from the district’s 34 charter schools. The Baltimore Sun quotes city schools CEO Sonja Santelises as saying the $1.3 billion budget proposal aims to stabilize the system. The district suffered a budget shortfall last year that led to layoffs of classroom teachers for the first time in a decade. The district says it also slightly inflated the per-pupil funding for charter schools last year, and so recalibrated the funding formula for this budget. The proposed cuts add up to an average of about $90,400 for each charter school, which could force layoffs and increase class sizes. The budget is up for a school board vote on May 8. ___ Information from: The Baltimore Sun, https://ift.tt/vTTIYn The post Baltimore school budget to cut estimated $5.5M from charters appeared first on WTOP . from

Gov. Hogan, Comptroller Franchot continue to criticize lawmakers over lack of Md. brewery reform

Image
Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency Gov. Larry Hogan and Comptroller Peter Franchot continued their two-man campaign against the General Assembly Thursday, criticizing Democratic legislators for stymieing craft brewery reform in the state. Franchot, who is a Democrat himself, has been championing a proposal to ease limits on the state’s brewing industry by getting rid of many caps on production, distribution and sales. But the legislation failed to make it through the General Assembly this year. The lack of reform has created a business environment in which no craft brewery would “touch Maryland with a 10-foot pole,” Franchot said, and leaves the state’s 85 breweries ripe for recruitment by other nearby states. Hogan, meanwhile, admitted that after the recent General Assembly session, he’s committed to supporting the local brewing industry “one beer at a time.” “After spending 90 days in our legislative session with [Senate President Th

Silver Spring man dead after backyard fire tragedy

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — A fire that broke out in the backyard of a home in Silver Spring, Maryland, ended in tragedy, with a man dying from burns sustained during the fire. It happened around 8 p.m. Thursday at a home on Briggs Chaney Road near Lear Lane Avenue, Burtonsville. “We do believe he is an elderly resident of the home,” said Capt. David Falcinelli with Montgomery County police about the victim. Falcinelli said homicide detectives from Montgomery County police were on scene to investigate. “Anytime there’s an unintended death in the county we’re definitely going to bring in the homicide detectives,” he said. The early indications are that the fire started while the homeowner was burning some brush in the backyard. Somehow things got out of control and he ended up sustaining burns as well. At this point there’s no foul play suspected in this incident. Police have not yet released the victim’s name.

Judge sides with Baltimore in suit over grant funding

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — A judge has sided with Baltimore over the federal government in a fight over funding for the nationwide Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program. Federal Judge Catherine C. Blake says in a ruling Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services acted in an “arbitrary and capricious” manner when it moved to stop grant funding for the five-year program two years earlier than planned. HHS defended its move saying studies have shown the program wasn’t working. The agency says it is disappointed with the ruling and is considering its next steps. Blake ordered the federal agency to process applications by Baltimore and the nonprofit Healthy Teen Network to continue grant funding. Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen calls the ruling a victory for the city’s youth. Police: Man kills wife, drops off kids, kills himself

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WOODSTOCK, Md. (AP) — Authorities say a Maryland man fatally shot his wife at their home and drove his children to a restaurant before killing himself. Police tell The Baltimore Sun that 35-year-old Harry Anthony Rey shot his wife, 28-year-old Amber Lynne Cox, inside their Woodstock mobile home Wednesday. Police say the couple’s children were home at the time of the shooting. Baltimore County police spokesman Cpl. Shawn Vinson says they believe Rey left the three boys, 7-year-old twins and a 6-year-old, at a Red Lobster. Rey then drove away and shot himself. Police found Rey inside his vehicle suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police haven’t released a motive in the killings, but Vinson says investigators are looking into previous calls to determine if there was a history of domestic violence. ___ Information from: The Baltimore Sun, https://ift.tt/vTTIYn The post Police: Ma
