Morales’ 3 HRs, 7 RBIs carry Blue Jays past Orioles 11-8

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles’ seven-game winning streak ended under a barrage of home runs by Kendrys Morales, who went deep three times and had a career-high seven RBIs to provide the Toronto Blue Jays with an 11-8 victory Thursday night. Looking to sustain its charge into the thick of the AL playoff picture, Baltimore bolted to a 5-2 lead in the third inning before the last-place Blue Jays stormed back behind Morales, who had four hits and scored four runs. Morales hit a two-run homer in the third, an RBI single in a five-run fifth, added a three-run drive in the sixth and concluded his big night with a solo shot in the eighth. It was his second career three-homer game. The first was Sept. 20, 2015, at Detroit. Adam Jones and Chris Davis homered for the Orioles, who fell 2 ½ games back in the race for the final AL wild card. ___ More AP baseball: http://ift.tt/2nfDW5O The post Morales’

New York denies key permit for new gas-fired power plant

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — State environmental regulators have denied a key permit for a $900 million power plant being built in southeastern New York. The Department of Environmental Conservation filed a decision Thursday with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission saying the environmental review of the 7.8-mile natural gas pipeline to the plant was deficient. The Millennium Pipeline Company project would supply gas for Competitive Power Venture’s 650-megawatt Valley Energy Center in Wawayanda, 53 miles north of New York City. The plant is due to go online next year. Environmental activists targeted the pipeline as a way to stop the power plant. FERC’s approval was contingent on the state approving federal Clean Water Act permits which were denied on Thursday. Competitive Power Ventures, based in Silver Spring, Maryland, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The post New York denies key p

Budget cuts for Maryland to be brought to state board

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s administration will bring tens of millions of dollars in mid-year budget cuts to a state board next week. David Brinkley, Hogan’s budget chief, said Thursday the actions are being taken to start addressing an estimated $742 million shortfall in the next fiscal year. A total of $86.2 million in total savings will be brought to the Board of Public Works. Of the total savings, $67.2 million will be budget reductions. About $22 million will come from the health department. Part of that will result from decreased average length of hospital stays, saving an estimated $10 million. Brinkley says about $5 million will be saved from renegotiating large state contract renewals. Another $5 million will come from the Cigarette Restitution Fund to offset Medicaid costs. Mnuchin won’t say if he wants Tubman on $20 bill

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is raising speculation that Harriet Tubman’s future on the $20 bill could be in jeopardy. Mnuchin is avoiding a direct answer when asked whether he supports the decision made by the Obama administration to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman, the 19th century African-American abolitionist famous for the Underground Railroad. He says in an interview on CNBC on Thursday, “People have been on the bills for a long period of time. This is something we’ll consider. Right now, we have a lot more important issues to focus on.” During last year’s campaign, Donald Trump praised Jackson, the nation’s seventh president, for his “history of tremendous success” and said the decision to replace him with Tubman was “pure political correctness.” The post Mnuchin won’t say if he wants Tubman on $20 bill appeared first on WTOP . from http://

County-by-county public financing deemed legal in Maryland

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The Maryland attorney general’s office has cleared the way for the drafting of a bill that would allow public financing for candidates on a county-by-county basis. The Washington Post reports General Assembly counsel Sandra Benson Brantley wrote in a letter earlier this month that a localized option would be legal if all candidates running in a given district had the same opportunity to use the public financing program, in response to a May request for guidance from Del. Marc A. Korman, D-Montgomery. Korman says the opinion is “good news” that allows him to draft a bill for the 2018 legislative session. Advocates of public financing say it increases opportunities for candidates to run without relying on big individual or corporate donors. Opponents say the government shouldn’t fund individual campaigns. ___ Information from: The Washington Post, http://ift.tt/g5lp9S The post C

Senate president: Taney remarks weren’t meant to divide

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland’s Senate President says he regrets that his remarks about the late Supreme Court Justice Roger Taney became a distraction. The Washington Post reports that a dozen African American ministers and community activists gathered in Prince George’s County Monday to condemn Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr.’s defense of the author of the Dred Scott decision. In a recent letter, Miller criticized the removal of the statue from State House grounds without a public meeting beforehand. He noted the “inflammatory and derogatory language” of the Dred Scott decision, but also stressed Taney’s “prior anti-slavery words and actions.” Miller said in a statement Monday that he regrets that sharing his “historical perspective” has distracted from “the larger issue we must face together as a nation” and his role to “bring unity and fight for a better Maryland.” ___ Information from: The Washingto
