Andino suspended 50 games for positive amphetamine test

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency NEW YORK (AP) — Baltimore Orioles infielder Robert Andino has been suspended for 50 games under baseball’s minor league drug program following a positive test for Amphetamine, a banned stimulant. The suspension was announced Wednesday by the commissioner’s office along with 72-game bans for Orioles outfielder Johnny Dixon and Arizona pitcher Bryan Valdez, who both tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. Andino, 33, is a veteran of 10 major league seasons, including 2009-12 with Baltimore at the major league level. His game-ending, ninth-inning single on the final day of the 2011 regular season gave the Orioles a 4-3 win over Boston, eliminating the Red Sox from playoff contention. He also has played for the Marlins (2005-08, 2016) and Seattle (2013). He has a .233 career batting average with 18 homers and 97 RBIs in 481 games. Andino agreed in February to a m

Orioles place C Welington Castillo on DL; summon Pena

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have placed catcher Welington Castillo on the 10-day disabled list with a testicular injury. Castillo spent time in the emergency room Tuesday night after being hurt in the ninth inning of an 8-3 loss to the New York Yankees. The freak injury occurred when a pitch that hit New York’s Didi Gregorius ricocheted downward and struck Castillo between the legs. Castillo is batting .317 with four homers and 17 RBIs. Castillo was on the disabled list earlier this month with right shoulder tendinitis. Caleb Joseph received most of the starts behind the plate during that time. Joseph started Wednesday night against New York. His backup was Fernando Pena, who had his contract selected by Baltimore from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. Former NAACP head Jealous running for Maryland governor

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — Former NAACP president Ben Jealous announced Wednesday that he’s running for governor of Maryland as a progressive Democrat, and in doing so he repeatedly tried to link popular incumbent Republican Gov. Larry Hogan to President Donald Trump. Jealous, who is running in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1, could face a crowded primary to challenge Hogan next year. Like a lot of Maryland Democrats these days, Jealous criticized Hogan for not speaking out against Trump’s policies. “We come together today both relieved that we live in a state as prosperous and full of promise as Maryland, and yet increasingly alarmed, as it seems like every week our governor becomes a little more like the lion in the Wizard of Oz: all strength and no political courage,” Jealous said. In a state where Trump won only 34 percent of the vote, Jealous also criticized Hogan for failing to stand up

Hogan allows Pr. George’s liquor board, sunlight bills to become law

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — Twin bills that boost oversight of the Prince George’s County liquor board will become law without Gov. Larry Hogan’s signature. Hogan signed 210 bills into law on Friday, but dozens of others will go into effect without his signature. Those unsigned bills include legislation that gives the Maryland attorney general the authority to go after drug manufacturers in instances of price-gouging. Other bills provide funding to televise some of the legislative floor sessions during the Maryland General Assembly session. But just because the governor doesn’t sign a bill doesn’t mean he opposes the intent of the legislation. In his letter regarding the Prince George’s County liquor board bills, Hogan said it is clear that oversight is needed. But “one section gives me great pause,” he wrote, referring to the section of the bill that removes the governor’s authority to appoint members of the liquo

Part of Maryland creek closed to shellfish harvesting

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — Part of a Maryland waterway is now closed to shellfish harvesting. The eastern portion of Herring Creek in St. Mary’s County has been reclassified from “conditionally approved” to “restricted,” effective Monday. A restricted classification means shellfish cannot be harvested from the area. The reclassification is due to recent evaluations showing unacceptable bacteria levels in portions of the waterway. The Maryland Department of the Environment made the decision to close it. The department conducts regular surveys to identify potential pollution sources near shellfish harvesting waters. Oysters and clams are often eaten raw or partially cooked and must come from waters that are not polluted. AAA: Memorial Day marks start of 100 deadliest days for teen drivers

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — Memorial Day is typically the start of the 100 deadliest days of the year for teen drivers, according to AAA. In the past five years, more than 5,000 people nationwide have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers during that 100-day period. To fight the deadly trend, safe-driving advocates are urging parents to practice driving with their teens as much as they can. Calvert County parent Cliff Tompkins felt confident letting his recently licensed 17-year-old daughter drive during a family trip in 2005. “We had spent a year and a half driving with her everywhere we went, telling her what to do and what to look out for,” he told WTOP. But after about half an hour in the driver’s seat, the unexpected happened. “She came upon some construction, and went to change lanes. An impatient driver behind her swerved around her. She tried to cut back into her lane, lost control, and we rolled

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s mayor says she wants to explore removing the city’s Confederate monuments. Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh tells The Baltimore Sun that the “city does want to remove” the monuments. She said the city will take a “closer look about how we go about following in the footsteps of New Orleans.” New Orleans recently removed three prominent Confederate statues and a monument heralding white supremacy. A commission appointed by former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake recommended that the city remove the Roger B. Taney Monument on Mount Vernon Place, and the Robert E. Lee and Thomas. J. “Stonewall” Jackson Monument in the Wyman Park Dell. But Rawlings-Blake didn’t remove the statues, citing cost and logistical concerns. Pugh says maybe the city can auction the monuments.
