Howard County bag fee to go into effect Thursday

Grow your business with help from top SEO experts in Maryland If you’re shopping in Howard County, Maryland, you’ll have to pay 5 cents for each disposable plastic bag you get at checkout starting Thursday. The bag fee goes in effect Oct. 1. However, if you use your own bag, you will not be charged the fee. But you may have to bag your own purchases, as some stores in the area will not bag your groceries in reusable bags due to COVID-19 sanitation measures. Some of the money from the new bag fee goes to stores, and some will go to a Howard County disposable plastics reduction fund that provides reusable bags to “vulnerable individuals,” reduces litter and improves overall environmental quality. Howard County joins Montgomery County in charging a fee for single-use bags. Last March, a bill banning plastic bags in Maryland was before the General Assembly, where it passed the House but did not make it in time for a Senate vote. Since the coronavirus public health emergency hit,

Maryland researchers identify what works to help children avoid obesity

Grow your business with help from top SEO experts in Maryland Fourteen percent of 2- to 5-year-olds are overweight, but researchers at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine have identified strategies they believe work to help prevent childhood obesity. “Young children learn by watching their families,” said study leader Maureen Black , a professor of pediatrics at the medical school. Black, who has a doctorate in developmental psychology, led the study that found toddlers learn what they live:  that mothers can help them by leading by example. “The message to parents of young children is … take care of yourself, eat healthy foods and be physically active, and your child will do what you’re doing. Your child wants to follow you,” she said. The yearlong study followed mothers and children beginning when the kids were 12 to 32 months old. “It is such a unique time to help children build healthy habits. It’s so much easier when they’re young than when they’re 15,” Black sai

Coronavirus infection rates continued to climb in many of the nine ZIP codes in the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn where new clusters have emerged, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday. 3 scientists’ advice on how to protect yourself from COVID-19

COVID-19 News Update: THIS JUST IN: COVID-19 Breaking News REAL TIME STATS: COVID-19 Updated Statistics Over the past several months, there has been controversy over the way SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, travels from an infected person to others. While official guidance has often been unclear, some aerosol scientists and public health experts have maintained that the spread of the virus in aerosols traveling through the air at distances both less than and greater than 6 feet has been playing a more significant role than appreciated.  In July, 239 scientists from 32 countries urged the World Health Organization (WHO) to acknowledge the possible role of airborne transmission in the spread of SARS-CoV-2.  Three days later, WHO did so, stating that under certain conditions, “short-range aerosol transmission, particularly in specific indoor locations, such as crowded and inadequately ventilated spaces over a prolonged period of time with infected persons cannot be

Balloon releases are banned in Montgomery County

Grow your business with help from top SEO experts in Maryland Releasing balloons is now banned in Montgomery County, Maryland, as the council passed a bill on Tuesday. You can no longer hold a balloon release in Montgomery County without the possibility of a fine. A bill passed unanimously by the council makes the intentional release of balloons a Class A civil violation, which could have penalties of $500 for the first offense and $750 for subsequent offenses. Council Vice President Tom Hucker introduced the bill earlier this year . “They [balloon releases] can be beautiful but they all come down, and they end up often in the digestive tracts of seabirds and turtles,” Hucker said. The violation only applies if you intentionally release a balloon from within Montgomery County. Also, the bill says that the owner of the private property where the balloons were released is responsible if an enforcement officer cannot identify a specific person who released the balloon. “If you o

As American, United, other airlines roll out passenger testing for COVID-19, here’s what you need to know

COVID-19 News Update: THIS JUST IN: COVID-19 Breaking News REAL TIME STATS: COVID-19 Updated Statistics Airlines hope a breakthrough to reassure passengers worried about contracting the coronavirus on flights is finally coming – the ability to offer testing. On Tuesday, American Airlines joined JetBlue Airways, United and Hawaiian airlines in announcing it plans to provide tests that can prove passengers don’t have COVID-19, allowing them to bypass quarantine restrictions depending on where they are traveling. “Our plan for this initial phase of preflight testing reflects the ingenuity and care our team is putting into rebuilding confidence in air travel,” American Airlines President Robert Isom said in a statement. The testing will be provided as a convenience to travelers. The airlines are not making them mandatory, and they are not free. Prices range from $80 to $250, depending on the airline and how the tests are conducted. The plan falls short of some of the lofty h
