Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Federal investigators say a surviving passenger of a deadly floatplane crash in Alaska reported the aircraft nosed over abruptly after hitting a swell or wave during takeoff, causing the cabin to quickly fill with water. A preliminary report of the July 19 crash released Tuesday by the National Transportation Safety Board says a witness reported the de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver seemed to accelerate slowly. According to the report, the witness said the plane climbed up to 100 feet before descending and cartwheeling onto the water upside down with seven people on board. A 57-year-old Maryland passenger, Joseph Patanella, died in the crash at the mouth of Tutka Bay south of Homer and one of his three children aboard was seriously injured. Maryland withholds $50M from DC Transit amid funding dispute

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) — Washington’s Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is asking Maryland to release over $50 million the state has withheld for a month amid ongoing funding disputes. The Washington Post reports Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld recently sent a letter to Maryland officials requesting funds be released immediately, warning Metro’s credit rating could take a hit. Maryland was supposed to release $56 million July 1, which was set to go toward new trains and buses. But Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn says Metro has delayed audits and hasn’t provided adequate information about its spending. The newspaper says the dispute may relate to Gov. Larry Hogan’s view Maryland spends too much on transit rather than roads. Metro says it’ll better detail how funds are spent in the future, and meet with Maryland officials to negotiate. ‘Have we no decency?’: National Cathedral leaders denounce Trump’s attack on Baltimore

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency In a letter posted online , three priests at The National Cathedral called out President Donald Trump for his “violent dehumanizing words” against the city of Baltimore and stated that the faith leaders’ “the time for silence” is “over.” The letter comes days after Trump launched attacks on Twitter at Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the city of Baltimore (parts of which lie in Cummings’ district) and Rev. Al Sharpton. In the letter, the priests call out the attacks as more than a “dog-whistle,” stating that the question is less about the president’s “sense of decency” but the decency of those who do not take action. Trump called Cummings a racist after the president called the congressman’s majority-black district in the Baltimore area a “rodent-infested mess” where “no human being would want to live.” On Monday, Trump attacked Rev. Al Sharpton on Twitter calling him a “con man, a troublemak

Judge to sentence woman who spent investor money on prayers

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency GREENBELT, Md. The federal judge set to sentence Dawn Bennett on Wednesday presided over a two-week trial last year that resulted in Bennett’s conviction on charges of securities fraud, wire fraud and bank fraud. Jurors heard testimony that Bennett used investors’ money to pay more than $800,000 for prayers by Hindu priests in India to ward off federal investigators while her business collapsed. An FBI agent said investigators found evidence in Bennett’s home that she tried to silence U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigators by casting “hoodoo” spells. Fast forward to today: Daily life is still tough, but after about two years as a student at one of Baltimore’s new “trauma-sensitive” schools, she’s learning to manage the cumulative effects of stress and grief that were so relentless they made her developing brain feel like a revving engine. Trump ‘rodent’ tweets ring true at Kushner-owned apartments

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — Davon Jones doesn’t have to look far to see the irony in President Donald Trump’s tweets that Baltimore is a “rat and rodent infested mess.” His apartment owned by the president’s son-in-law has been invaded by mice since he moved in a year ago. “I don’t know how they come in,” Jones says. “Every time I catch them, they come right back.” Jared Kushner’s family real estate firm owns thousands of apartments and townhomes in the Baltimore area, and some have been criticized for the same kind of disrepair and neglect that the president has accused local leaders of failing to address. Trump aides privately balk at Cummings attacks as strategy

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency President Donald Trump’s attacks on Democratic Rep. But there are no signs Trump believes his strategy is wrong or is planning to pull back his attacks on the African American lawmaker from Baltimore. One official confirmed that some aides express discomfort at the attacks, which do not appear to have been part of a larger strategy, during a Monday staff meeting first reported by The New York Times . Instead, aides said Trump has long expressed annoyance at Cummings’ attempts to investigate members of the administration and identified Baltimore as a target over the weekend. Trump was particularly irked at the House Oversight and Reform Committee , which Cummings chairs, moving to obtain information related to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner

Maryland offers $3 million in security grants to places of worship

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency Deadly attacks over the last few years have brought fear to many places of worship — and have made security a concern. “It’s happened to synagogues. It’s happened in churches. It’s happened … in Wisconsin . It’s happened to black churches ,” said Dr. Samir Jafri of the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. The state of Maryland will be doing its part to lift that fear. Last week, the state announced it would provide $3 million in grant money for religious organizations looking for help in covering security costs. Organizations can apply over the next year for the grants, which can be applied toward measures such as “training, cameras, security personnel, lighting,” said Glenn Fueston, executive director of Gov. Larry Hogan’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention. The grant process was chosen, he said, so that houses of worship could ask for exactly what they need. “They know t

Woodstock 50 vows ‘peaceful enjoyment,’ free tickets, at Merriweather Post

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency If Woodstock 50 indeed happens at the Merriweather Post Pavilion , in Columbia, Maryland, concert tickets will be free — and valid for single days only, WTOP has learned from festival organizers. With a maximum capacity of 32,500 for a weekend concert at Merriweather Post, and Woodstock 50’s stated goal of “3 days of peace music,” reports over the weekend that tickets would be given away for free raised the possibility of security issues in Howard County, Maryland, where the 1967 amphitheater is located. Organizers of Woodstock 50, led by 1969 co-founder Michael Lang, tell WTOP safeguards are in place to ensure that hundreds of thousands of fans in search of a free ticket don’t descend on Columbia. In 1969, what began as a festival with an admission charge became free, as approximately 400,000 attendees overwhelmed the concert infrastructure. A 10-mile traffic jam clogged the New York Thruway

Michelle Obama shades Trump after his derogatory tweets about Baltimore

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency Michelle Obama is a master in the subtle art of shade. The former first lady took to Twitter Saturday to honor a step-dancing team from Baltimore, just hours after President Donald Trump attacked a prominent African-American congressman and referred to his Baltimore district as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.” “On #NationalDanceDay, I’m shouting out the Lethal Ladies, a Baltimore STEP team who I saw perform back in 2017. I’m so proud of you all—and everyone who’s dancing today!” Obama wrote. Her tweet came as Baltimore leaders and residents are defending their city against the President’s tirade, which targeted Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings. The lawmaker represents Maryland’s 7th Congressional District and recently lambasted conditions at the US-Mexico border . Obama’s tweet makes no mention of Trump. But if you watch the video clip, the message is clear. “When someone is crue

The state lawmakers represent the area in the General Assembly. Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley and Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman joined them, as well as activists for gun-violence prevention. The campaign was prompted by the recent deaths of Edward Montre Seay, a rapper, and 16-year-old Elijah Wilson, who both were gunned down near public housing communities. Gun advocates challenge Maryland’s concealed carry gun laws

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from the Worldwide Agency FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — A gun rights advocacy group is challenging Maryland’s concealed carry gun laws. The Frederick News-Post reports that the lawsuit has been filed against the state’s Handgun Permit Review Board. A brief has been filed in the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. It contends the state’s laws are unconstitutional and have been superseded by other case precedents. The brief was filed by Maryland Shall Issue, a gun rights organization. The Court of Special Appeals is Maryland’s intermediate appellate court. Under Maryland law, a state resident must provide a “good and substantial reason’ to be granted a concealed carry permit. Maryland is one of 10 states considered a “may issue” state. That means it requires a permit to carry a concealed gun. Granting that permit is at the discretion of local authorities. ___ Information from: The Frederick (Md.) News-Post, https://ift.tt/Y8
