Trump signs Ashanti Alert Act into law

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — In one of his final tasks of 2018, President Donald Trump signed into law the Ashanti Alert Act, creating a nationwide alert system for missing, endangered adults between the ages of 18 and 64. The law is named for Ashanti Billie, of Prince George’s County, Maryland, who disappeared from the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area in September 2017. Her body was found two weeks later in North Carolina. At 19 years old, Billie was too old for an Amber Alert, the child abduction alert system, and too young for a Silver Alert, the system to help locate seniors who are missing. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., a principal sponsor of the Ashanti Alert Act, said the young woman fell through the cracks of the system. To bridge the gap, the federal Ashanti Alert system will empower police to notify radio and TV stations, and activate road and highway electronic signboards for critically missing adults. “Despite

Maryland’s Airbnb rentals total around $57M in 2018

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland homeowners who rented their property using a home-sharing website generated around $57 million in income in 2018. The Baltimore Sun reports about 6,500 Marylanders used Airbnb to rent individual rooms or entire spaces to around 383,000 visitors this year. The company said in a statement Monday that residents who use Airbnb to generate supplemental income averaged about $5,600 in 2018. The figures come on the heels of a decision by the Baltimore City Council to impose a strict set of rules on renting out property on online platforms, including Airbnb. The tax on the company and other online short-term rentals is expected to generate an additional $1 million in revenue for Baltimore annually. The legislation includes a grandfather clause that would allow existing hosts to rent their home and another property. ___ Information from: The Baltimore Sun, https://bsun.md/vTTIYn So

Housing authority says Baltimore rat population down in public housing

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — In the year following the launch of a program to eliminate rats from public housing complexes, Baltimore’s housing authority says the rat population is down 82 percent. The housing authority’s executive director, Janet Abrahams, tells The Baltimore Sun the Healthy Elimination of All Pests Longterm program has eliminated more than 1,500 rat burrows at 22 complexes, and will continue through at least the summer. Code enforcement officers have issued more than 1,400 citations for rodents and trash coming from homes and businesses adjacent to the complexes. Residents at East Baltimore’s Perkins Homes, like Tonya Jackson and James Morton, say HEAL has made little difference, as rats are still plaguing them. Abrahams says 330 burrows will be tackled, and a private contractor will continue to provide quarterly rodent and cockroach treatment. ___ Information from: The Baltimore Sun, https:

No jail time for Md. breeder who sold puppy to Biden, had 40 German shepherds seized

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency POCOMOKE CITY, Md. (AP) — A Maryland breeder who once sold a puppy to former vice president Joe Biden will serve no time in jail after pleading guilty to animal cruelty. In July, Somerset County officials seized 40 German shepherds from Linda Brown, the owner of Jolindy’s German Shepherds. Witnesses testified in court that the dogs were living without regular access to clean water and food, and in housing covered in feces and urine. Brown pleaded guilty to three counts of animal cruelty, down from 14, and received three years’ unsupervised probation Thursday. She can’t own more than the four dogs she currently has. Brown told WMDT-TV that she took the plea deal to avoid jail time, but believes she’s innocent. She says she will breed dogs again, even if she has to leave Maryland. ___ Information from: WMDT-TV, http://www.wmdt.com/ Source from http://bit.ly/2TimQ5X Digital Marketing Agency in Ma

New health insurance laws in Maryland taking effect

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Several new laws mandating health insurers cover procedures and instructions for handling certain health conditions are taking effect in Maryland in the new year. A new law taking effect Tuesday expands coverage for equipment, supplies and self-management training to apply to elevated or impaired glucose levels caused by prediabetes. That’s a condition when blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. The new mandate also will apply to treating impaired glucose levels induced by pregnancy. Another new law will require health insurers to cover treatment of a chronic swelling, often in an arm or leg, known as lymphedema. That’s an abnormal collection of fluid just beneath the skin. It usually develops when lymph vessels are damaged, or lymph nodes are removed. Source from http://bit.ly/2QfV5Ji Digital Marketing Agency in Maryland

Despite record rainfall, Metro insulator fire incidents drop

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — Water infiltration into Metro’s tunnels is historically the leading cause of insulator fire incidents, but the numbers are down this year despite record rainfall. According to a news release, Metro encountered only 22 insulator-related or fire incidents in 2018, down from 65 in 2016 — a 66 percent drop. Metro credits this sharp drop in incidents to waterproofing of tunnels, particularly the vulnerable stretch of Red Line tunnel between Friendship Heights and Medical Center stations. In recent years, that three-mile stretch of tunnel — which accounts for less than three percent of the whole system — was the site of nearly half of reported incidents. In 2016, there were 29 insulator fires along that stretch. In 2018, there were three. The reaction stems from the two devastating floods that hit the historic town in 2016 and 2018. But flood mitigation plans have some breathing easier. Under the plan unveiled by Howard County Executive Calvin Ball , inspections of nine area waterways would occur more frequently. Mark DeLuca, Chief of the Bureau of Environmental Services, would have teams check for debris in those streams, including Tiber Branch, Hudson Branch and New Cut. “If we find trees that are down that would later result in culverts being blocked by the debris and causing some flooding, that would be eliminated [by the more frequent checks],” said DeLuca.
