Maryland fugitive arrested after police spot open container

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) — Rehoboth Beach police say a fugitive wanted in Maryland has been arrested after an officer spotted an open container of alcohol in his car. Authorities say 29-year-old Leopoldo Diaz of Laurel, was taken into custody Friday afternoon after he pulled into a parking space next to an officer dealing with a parking issue. The officer spotted two alcohol containers in Diaz’s car, one of them open. Believing Diaz was impaired, police conducted a blood-alcohol test. Auditors: panel exposed voter records to potential hacking

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — A legislative audit has found that Maryland’s Board of Elections needlessly exposed the full Social Security numbers of almost 600,000 voters to potential hacking, risking theft of voters’ identities. A report released Friday also criticized the board’s handling of ballot security, disaster preparedness, contracting and balancing its books. The Baltimore Sun reports (http://bsun.md/2pvOFMF ) that state lawmakers called for a hearing in response to the report, which prompted strong reaction from critics of the board and administrator Linda Lamone. Doug Mayer, a spokesman for Gov. Larry Hogan, said the report underscores some of the governor’s concerns about a lack of executive oversight at the board, where the day-to-day management is outside the administration’s control. Lamone said most of the findings in the report have already been addressed. The post Auditors: panel exposed vote

Ravens select Houston LB Bowser in 2nd round of NFL draft

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens fulfilled their quest to add a pass rusher, selecting Houston linebacker Tyus Bowser on Friday night with the 47th overall pick in the NFL draft. Bowser is a 6-foot-2, 244-pounder who had 8 1/2 sacks in eight games last season for the Cougars. He missed five games with a fractured orbital bone, which he received in a fight with a teammate. Baltimore had only 31 sacks last season and missed the playoffs after going 8-8. The retirement of Zachary Orr due to injury, the release of Elvis Dumervil and the advancing age of Terrell Suggs (34) put the Ravens in need someone capable of chasing down a quarterback. They hope Bowser fits the requirement. On Thursday, the Ravens fortified their defensive backfield by selecting Alabama cornerback Marlon Humphrey with the 16th overall pick. Humphrey wore a broad smile when he met with the media at the team complex late

Wine of the Week: Taking your wine out to dinner

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — It wasn’t that long ago that D.C. and the surrounding area was considered a foodie wasteland with limited dining options and only a handful of innovative chefs. Today, the city is considered one of the best food cities in America, known for a wide variety of hip hangouts, celebrity chef outposts and exceptional restaurants. Just look at the U Street Corridor or Barracks Row for proof of a vibrant restaurant scene. It also wasn’t that long ago when the idea of bringing a special bottle of wine to a restaurant — particularly in Northern Virginia or Montgomery County, Maryland — was frowned upon, if not outright illegal. That was then. Today, many restaurants throughout the D.C. region allow patrons to bring wines into their establishments. Baltimore Co. police criticized for withholding body cam footage

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON — The Baltimore County Police Department is facing criticism for its decision to withhold body camera footage in connection with several officer-involved shootings, including fatal altercations, that have occurred since January. Officers shot six people in four separate incidents since the beginning of the year, and the department has released footage from just one of the cases. Video captured by body cameras in the other three cases has been withheld from the public. “The commitment to transparency and accountability that the body cameras were supposed to represent looks more like lip service than an actual commitment,” said attorney David Rocah with the ACLU of Maryland. County police were involved in fatal shootings in January and March, as well as a pair of nonfatal shootings this month. Camera footage was released from the January incident. Larry Hogan has ordered a study of the state’s developing medical marijuana industry to ensure opportunities for minority participation. Hogan directed the Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs on Thursday to initiate the study. The governor’s office says he’s ordering the study in response to concerns expressed by the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland. Legislation that would have created more licenses to grow marijuana to address a lack of minority ownership after a disparity study failed to pass in the legislative session that ended this month. Leaders of the black caucus have called for a special session to pass the bill. Hogan wrote in a letter Thursday that he wants to ensure opportunities for minority participation in the industry.
