Officers foil attempt to smuggle drug into Maryland prison

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency JESSUP, Md. (AP) — Corrections officials in Maryland say officers have foiled a second attempt in as many days to smuggle the narcotic suboxone into state prisons. The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says 20-year-old Daniel Lamont Johnson attempted to smuggle the drug during a Saturday visit to Dorsey Run Correctional Facility. The agency on Sunday said officers set up a checkpoint after receiving a tip and intercepted the Glenn Dale resident. Johnson faces multiple counts, including drug possession and possession with intent to distribute. Suboxone is used to treat heroin addiction, but can be misused to get high. Authorities arrested an attorney Friday accused of hiding suboxone in binders he took into a state prison in Hagerstown. Court records do not list an attorney who could comment on Johnson’s behalf. Glen Echo Park’s historic carousel to shut down for repairs

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency If you plan to take a ride on Glen Echo Park’s historic Dentzel carousel in Montgomery County, you better get a move on. The carousel, which has been a fixture of Glen Echo Park since 1921, will close Monday for repairs. Riding the carousel is a yearly tradition for generations of Washington area families. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places for its hand woodcarvings popular during the early 1900s. Between 1983 and 2003, each hand carved animal on the carousel was fully restored. The local community stepped in to save the carousel when threatened with a sale to another park community in the early 1970s. It was also the site of civil rights protests that took place in the 1960s during the era of the privately owned amusement park. The carousel is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2020 with a new roof, an updated fire suppression system and a new band organ room. The cost of the repa

The agency says Mitchell has been charged with drug possession and possession with intent to deliver. Suboxone is used to treat heroin addiction, but can be misused to get high. Mitchell told The Associated Press that he is “totally innocent of the charges.” The department says Mitchell walked into the facility with two binders and attempted to leave without them. The agency says a front lobby correctional officer told a colleague to grab the folders from Mitchell’s client. Source

Major delays remain on Bay Bridge after Friday crash

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency Traffic on the eastbound Bay Bridge on a summer Friday afternoon is never ideal, but those headed to the Delaware and Maryland beaches are really in for it: Major delays remain on the eastbound side after a crash with injuries closed the span earlier in the day. Though the lanes were reopened around 1:30 p.m., delays remain on Route 50 headed to the bridge, and will be compounded by the influx of drivers headed to the bridge as a typical Friday rolls on, said Jerry Booth in the WTOP Traffic Center. Delays began before Rowe Boulevard out of Parole, trying to get across the Severn River Bridge to the toll plaza, the WTOP Traffic Center said at about 2 p.m. The westbound span was running two-way traffic in order to help the eastbound side out, but there was a crash on the westbound side before the eastbound one, so they’re back to one-way traffic, and that’s no picnic either. Hogan says he’ll keep pushing for redistricting reform

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland’s Republican Gov. Larry Hogan says he’ll keep pushing for redistricting reform in the state, but Democrats say a national solution for reform is needed, not a piecemeal approach on a state-by-state basis. The Supreme Court on Thursday reversed the outcome of federal court rulings in Maryland and North Carolina, where courts had ordered new congressional district maps to be drawn due to partisan gerrymandering. That’s when political parties in control draw districts that favor them. Hogan says the court’s ruling is “terribly disappointing to all who believe in fair elections.” Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller says the high court’s decision “only strengthens the need for Congress and the President to work together to create a set of rules across the country.” Source from https://ift.tt/2Yh4Xaz Digital Marketing Agency in Maryland

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore City officials approved using $10 million in excess revenue to cover the ongoing cost of the cyber attacks that immobilized some of the cities systems almost two months ago. WBAL reports the city’s estimates board approved the emergency funds Wednesday to help the hack recovery process, which is moving into its eighth week. This month, a Baltimore technology official said the city had initially resisted help from the state after the attack. Systems such as water billing remain offline. The city’s budget office has estimated the total cost of responding to the hack at $18 million. Hackers demanded$ 80,000 in ransom, but city officials said they have been advised by law enforcement authorities not to pay it. This month, two cities in Florida paid ransoms to hackers after similar cyber attacks. ___ Information from: WBAL-TV, http://www.wbaltv.com Source from https://ift

Census, redistricting decisions due on high court’s last day

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency WASHINGTON (AP) — Two issues that could determine the distribution of political power for the next decade await resolution on the Supreme Court’s final day of decisions before a long summer break. Chief Justice John Roberts could well be the author of decisions on both politically charged topics Thursday, whether to allow a citizenship question on the 2020 census and place limits on drawing electoral districts for partisan gain. The census results and the rules by which political districts will be redrawn following the next population count help determine how districts are drawn and where. Roberts has repeatedly said he doesn’t want the public to view the court as just another political entity, even now that it has five conservatives appointed by Republican presidents and four liberals appointed by Democrats. Yet decisions in these cases could amplify criticism of the court. The justices are set to ta

Report: Baltimore staffers kept pay, benefits after moving

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — An investigation by Baltimore’s inspector general shows two senior employees with the city’s housing department were paid a total of nearly $15,000 plus benefits while working “remotely” as full-time staffers outside Maryland, in one case logging just two hours a week. The Tuesday report found one employee moved to Europe to study, while continuing to work for the department full-time on a $90,000 annual salary. The Baltimore Sun reports the employee took seven weeks of paid sick days but never claimed any illnesses. The report accused the staffer of logging two-to-four hours a week over five months. Another staffer was allowed to make similar arrangements over three months upon moving to the West Coast. Housing department spokeswoman Tammy Hawley blamed it on “some misunderstandings and some errors.” The housing commissioner says the employees reimbursed the department. ___ Informa

Md. Dems: Gov. Hogan took $200,000 in illegal campaign donations

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency Maryland’s Democratic Party is accusing Gov. Larry Hogan of campaign finance violations and is now calling for an investigation into his financial dealings. Democratic Maryland Sen. Clarence Lam, who bought the allegations to light, began looking into Hogan’s campaign contributions after the governor vetoed a bill Lam proposed in May that would allow more transparency within Hogan’s appointment office. Lam says he then noticed a connection between Hogan’s office and donations from the University of Maryland Medical Board. By statute, the governor appoints members of the board. According to Lam, he then turned to the campaign finance database and found a correlation between appointees and donations.
