Md. Gov. Hogan to sign bill reforming Board of Regents after McNair death

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland Gov. Hogan is scheduled to sign the bill into law Tuesday. The new law will require the board to livestream its open meetings online. It also adds four members to the 17-member board. It also will require vote tallies from meetings in publicly available meeting minutes. The university was shaken by the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died of heatstroke after a workout. Once the public-private partnership designation is approved, the state expects to quickly issue a request for qualifications from private companies so that a short list of the private firms or groups that would design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Beltway toll lanes from the American Legion Bridge to Interstate 95 could be finalized in July. There is still some sharp opposition to the plan from groups who would prefer transit options also be included. Private groups would

As speaker vote looms, Black Caucus leaders declare ‘this is our time’

Leaders of the group claimed that approximately 30 members of the caucus are firmly in Davis’s camp, willing to back him not only in Wednesday morning’s Democratic Caucus vote but also in the special session of the House that is set to begin at noon. If that number is valid and if it holds (leadership votes are notoriously difficult to forecast, even for seasoned legislators), the Prince Georgian could hit the magic number of 71 by aligning himself with the 42-member House Republican caucus, a subject of tantalizing — and divi

No arrests day after chaotic shooting attack in Baltimore

Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police detectives are trying to figure out whether a chaotic shooting attack on a crowd enjoying a weekend cookout might be frenzied competition between underworld groups, a case of a triggerman seeking vengeance, or some other kind of senseless strike. But one thing’s for certain: In a city accustomed to gun violence the Sunday shooting that killed one and wounded seven others in a gritty West Baltimore neighborhood barely stands out in a sea of similar shootings in Maryland’s biggest city. Cassandra Crifasi of the Center for Gun Policy and Research at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University said Monday that the weekend shooting exemplifies the kind of standard violence now seen in Baltimore. Daryoush struggled to maintain the business, until he decided to build a traditional clay oven, like those in Iran, and put freshly-baked pita bread on the menu. It was a hit with customers, and Moby’s pivoted to a Persian-inspired menu, and Moby’s Luncheonette became Moby Dick’s House of Kabob. Maryland voters have widely divergent opinions on the direction of the jurisdiction where they live — and those opinions are based to a large degree on the economic health of their home cities and counties. A wide-ranging poll, conducted for Our Voice Maryland, was taken earlier this month to gauge voters’ opinions on a variety of topics. Rather than seeking public opinion on politicians and elections, the poll was designed to test the mood of the electorate and voters’ priorities — particularly in the state’s six largest jurisdictions. The poll results suggest that the state electorate is nervous about the future and that opinions differ based on where the poll respondents live. Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency BALTIMORE (AP) — A Maryland appeals court has overturned a jury verdict against a Baltimore police officer sued by the family of a man he shot. The Court of Special Appeals ruled Thursday that any prudent officer could reasonably have made the same decision David Austin did to shoot Jeffrey Blair as Blair charged him after a February 2015 traffic stop. The court said a judge erred in denying Austin’s motion for judgment in his favor at the end of trial testimony. The jury later returned verdicts against Austin on counts of civil assault and excessive force and awarded damages to Blair’s family. Grow Your Business in Maryland with digital marketing services from The W Agency Embattled Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh remains in office while out on medical leave, and there’s no legal mechanism to remove her due to illness or incapacity as the leader of the Maryland city. “There’s no equivalent of the 25th amendment under the Baltimore charter,” said Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University Matthew Crenson, referring to the amendment that allows for the removal of a U.S. president due to illness. Pugh’s attorney Steven Silverman told reporters Thursday Pugh was not “lucid” and was too ill to make any decisions about her future. Pugh has been on indefinite leave since April 1 as she is treated for pneumonia. Silverman said she was still recovering. Eric Snell had pleaded guilty three days into his trial on charges that he conspired to sell drugs with members of a rogue Baltimore police unit called the Gun Trace Task Force, a plainclothes squad that resold looted narcotics, conducted robberies and falsified evidence. “Prosecuting law enforcement officers is painful but necessary if we are to restore the public’s trust in our justice system. No one is above the law,” Maryland U.S. Attorney Robert Hur said in a statement after Snell’s sentencing. About one third of them received compensation through the network’s murky arrangements with their businesses, ranging from pest control to insurance and management consultation. One of the state’s largest private employers, the university-based medical system did not explain why Chrencik was asked to go on leave or why he stepped down. But they described his resignation as “an important step in movi
