WASHINGTON — One person was sent to the hospital after someone pepper-sprayed passengers on a bus Monday evening in Montgomery County.

The Metrobus was near Georgia Avenue and Windham Lane near Westfield Wheaton mall at the time, fire officials said.

“Police arrived first and indicated that there were a number of patients on the bus that had been exposed,” said Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.

“Additional EMS resources were called the scene,” Piringer said. “A couple dozen first responders eventually would come and evaluate the passengers.”

Four to five adults and two children were impacted by the spray. Several were medically evaluated at the scene, officials said.

One adult was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Montgomery County police are investigating. A police spokesman said officers interviewed witnesses on the bus, and that some had conflicting accounts related to how the altercation began.

The incident is considered a minor assault. No one has been arrested.
