WASHINGTON — The Bethesda home of astronaut and senator John Glenn, custom built for the astronaut/senator and his wife in 1990 is on the market for $1,575,000.

The single family home was initially listed for $1.65 million but was reduced Friday.

The home boasts five bedroom suites, including the main level owner’s suite, and is on a .65 acre private lot with four and a half baths. It is listed by Ilene Gordon, Wendy Banner and The Banner Team of Long and Foster and is touted as having some of the best views in the area overlooking the 11th hole of Avenel TPC golf course and Rock Run Park.

The home is listed as having: Kitchen open to family room with wall of windows overlooking parkland and golf course, sun filled living and dining rooms with fireplaces, the main level owner’s suite overlooks parkland and a golf course.

The upper level has three bedrooms suites — one with private en suite bath and two sharing a Jack and Jill bath.

The lower level has a recreation room with wet bar, fireplace and wall of french doors leading to stone patio with firepit, and a 5th bedroom suite, exercise room, game room, wine cellar, kitchenette, office, storage room and workshop. It has two garages and a golf cart bay.

The house at 7208 Eagle Ridge Place is holding an open house on Sunday.

In March artifacts and belongings from the Ohio native’s long career as an astronaut and a senator went on sale at the Bethesda house.

Items included mementos of Glenn’s career with NASA, the Senate and the Marine Corps. Decorative and household pieces were available ranging from jewelry to Tiffany crystal to mission clothing to a Mickey Mouse pin with Swarovski crystals. Stetson hats, meerschaum pipes and even dress shoes — for only $10 — were on sale.

Just a few hours into the sale, more than 260 people had gotten numbers to get inside.

Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth, in 1962. He served in the Senate from 1974 to 1999, and became the oldest person to fly in space in 1998, when he was 77. He died in 2016.
