Police in Montgomery County responding to the report of a crash near downtown Silver Spring Thursday said two people fled from a vehicle and found another person who was shot inside.

The person who was shot is believed to a juvenile male, police said on Twitter. He was taken to the hospital. His condition is not known.

Police said the report of a collision in the 300 block of Wayne Avenue came in at 7:18 a.m. Thursday. On Twitter, the police department called the incident a “bailout,” an apparent reference to the two people who fled.

The ensuing investigation has sparked a heavy police presence, closing Wayne Avenue between Dale Drive and Sligo Creek Parkway Thursday morning and snarling traffic throughout Silver Spring.

“This has really backed up traffic throughout that area, especially along Sligo Creek Parkway, which is really at a crawl, at times stopped, in both directions,” said WTOP Traffic Reporter Reada Kessler.
