Tractor-trailer crash leads to Beltway lane closures, miles of backups
Several lanes of the Capital Beltway are blocked after a tractor-trailer truck hit two jersey barriers and leaked fuel Monday afternoon.
The truck was on the Outer Loop a bit after noon when it hit both barriers just before what Dave Dildine in the WTOP Traffic Center called “the big curve” — where the Beltway passes over Interstate 270.
Debris from the crash fell onto I-270, where lanes were closed for a while and a few damaged vehicles were reported. All lanes seem to have been reopened, though traffic is slowed.
Only the right lane has been getting by on the Beltway, Dildine said; at times, he added, they’ve also been closing that lane, and will have to do so occasionally again, as they still have to remove the truck.
The hazmat team is helping deal with the fuel spill. The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as not life-threatening.
UPDATE: Right lane gets by the disabled tractor trailer. Expect delays from Silver Spring #mdtraffic https://t.co/VzSJf5n4dN

But that’s not the only problem on the Beltway: Lanes are blocked just before Connecticut Avenue for another tractor-trailer crash, in which several people were hurt.
Update – Outerloop beltway I495 just before Connecticut Avenue, some lanes blocked, @MCFRS_EMIHS transporting several patients w/ NLT injuries https://t.co/OZxIN4sF0i
