Montgomery County’s Pet Waste Management Program Establishes 100th Pet Waste Station

Montgomery County is generally regarded as a community where its residents contribute to being environmentally aware on many issues. One of those issues is reducing the amount of pet waste left on the ground. The bacteria in the pet waste can lead to the contamination of local streams.

Although many residents are vigilant about picking up after their pets, some need incentives to make the disposal of pet waste easier. The availability of “pet waste stations” can do just that. 

The County’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been working with 30 homeowner associations to educate residents about the importance of picking up after their pets. Over the past five years, the department’s Pet Waste Management Program has worked with these communities by installing pet waste stations. Recently, a milestone was reached when the program installed its 100th station.

It is estimated about 40 percent of dog walkers do not pick up after their pet. ... more
