WASHINGTON — At a press conference Friday, the Anne Arundel County police chief said the man accused of killing five people at the Capital Gazette Thursday was there to inflict as much pain as possible.

“The fellow was there to kill as many people as he could kill,” Anne Arundel County Police Chief Timothy Altomare said.

Police said Friday that Jarrod W. Ramos, 38, used a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun legally purchased a year or so ago to kill employees of the Annapolis newspaper.

Altomare said more than 300 officers from all manner of enforcement agencies descended on the scene of the shooting. There were no shots fired by law enforcement during the arrest.

He also told reporters at a press conference that officers were on the scene within two minutes of the first call about the shooting.

After Ramos was taken into custody, officers executed a search warrant at Ramos’ apartment in the 400 block of Armstrong Court.

The chief said officers found evidence at the home indicating that he was planning a shooting at the Gazette and that he acted alone.

He also said that Ramos had a history with the Anne Arundel police and was investigated as part of a 2013 incident involving threatening online comments.

The Capital Gazette decided to not press charges in 2013; they worried it would exacerbate the conflict, he said.

Ramos was charged with five counts of first-degree murder and could face life in prison. He was ordered held without bond Friday morning.
