BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore’s Inner Harbor has been discolored from a plume of brown sediment leaking from an area storm drain.

The Baltimore Sun quotes the Maryland Department of the Environment as saying the sediment may have come from a nearby tunnel’s drainage improvement project Thursday. The tunnel, owned by CSX Transportation, carries freight trains beneath the city to the port of Baltimore.

Maryland Department of the Environment spokesman Jay Apperson says the agency has ordered the discharge of sediment stopped. CSX said Thursday night that the discharge source hasn’t been found, but it’s working to repair the stormwater line. Environmental advocacy group Blue Water Baltimore called the sediment plume a “major pollution event.”

Officials say a preliminary investigation showed the leak wasn’t hazardous to people walking nearby.
