BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore authorities have held a ceremony honoring the nine city students who have lost their lives to violence so far this year.

Baltimore Schools CEO Sonja Santelises told attendees there was “no limit to the outrage we feel when we contemplate what we have lost.” She says the nine youngsters lost to Baltimore’s violence so far in 2018 were “filled with potential and possibility.”

WBAL-TV reports that Santelises joined other Baltimore leaders, teachers and students to honor the youngsters. Their names were read aloud during the somber Wednesday ceremony.

The city of roughly 615,000 inhabitants ended 2017 with 343 killings, bringing Baltimore’s annual homicide rate to its highest ever: roughly 56 killings per 100,000 people. In comparison, Los Angeles, with about 4 million residents, saw 305 homicides last year.
