WASHINGTON — Police in Montgomery County are investigating what led to the off-campus shooting of a Paint Branch High School student Monday morning.

The 11th grader was shot in the cheek and transported to the hospital after he walked into the Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department at around 9 a.m., according to a letter to the community from Principal Myriam Yarbrough.

The letter said the student is conscious and alert.

Yarbrough said police indicated there is no danger to the school community, but as a precaution there is an increased security presence at the school and there would be no open lunch on Monday.
