Baltimore County, not officer, may pay shooting death award

BALTIMORE (AP) — If a $37 million jury award to the family of a woman killed by a Baltimore County police officer survives expected appeals, the officer won’t pay a thing.

County Attorney Michael E. Field tells The Baltimore Sun that Officer Royce Ruby would not be responsible for any amount paid to the family of Korryn Gaines, since the shooting was found to be justified and Ruby was acting in the line of duty when he shot the armed woman and wounded her son during a standoff.

Friday’s verdict in the family’s civil suit is one of the largest of its kind in Maryland, but the Sun reports that any award that survives appeals will likely be capped at $800,000.
