With eye on bay health, state picks firms to scoop sediment
BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland has picked a pair of companies to dredge sediment behind a Susquehanna River dam. Officials will monitor the pilot project to see if it improves the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
The Baltimore Sun reported Saturday that the state has chosen Northgate-Dutra Joint Venture. It appears to be a combined effort of the Dutra Group and Northgate Environmental Services.
Officials could not offer specific details on the project’s cost and schedule because the contract isn’t finalized.
Maryland’s governor is focused on ways to reduce pollution flow into the Chesapeake from the Susquehanna and through the Conowingo Dam.
The river provides about half of the bay’s fresh water. It also accounts for about half of the bay’s nitrogen pollution and about a quarter of its phosphorous and sediment pollution.
