BALTIMORE (AP) — As Baltimore remains under a hypothermia alert, outreach work to a homeless encampment has taken on increased urgency.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Mayor Catherine Pugh and other city officials visited an encampment of 20 people under the Jones Falls Expressway in Mount Vernon on Wednesday. The head of the Mayor’s Office of Human Services, Terry Hickey, says outreach workers are trying to help people move into shelters and enroll in rapid rehousing and permanent supportive housing programs.

Hickey said the encampment won’t be cleared until each person has a needs assessment and definitive place to stay. He said Baltimore’s winter shelters have “hundreds of extra beds” each night.

The recent drop in temperatures could leave Baltimore in one of its longest periods of sub-freezing temperatures in years.
