WASHINGTON — A Maryland man has died after a crash on the Capital Beltway’s Inner Loop near the College Park area Tuesday afternoon, state police said.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., Maryland State Police responded to a crash involving a pedestrian in the area of eastbound Inner Loop, between New Hampshire Avenue and Interstate 95. A truck tractor traveling eastbound on the Beltway hit a man who was walking on the roadway in the right lane, state police said.

The man has been identified as Mark Armstrong, 66, of Silver Spring.

Police do not know why Armstrong was walking in the roadway when the trailer part of the truck tractor struck him. He died from his injuries, state police said.

State police continue to investigate the crash. They said the driver of the truck — identified as Richard Mitchell, 46, of Cordova, Tennessee — did not have any signs of impairment at the time of the investigation.

The two eastbound right lanes of the Beltway were closed for around three hours, state police said.

Anyone with information about this crash can call the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack at 301-345-3101.
