WASHINGTON — Futuristic-looking bus stations will shelter passengers along a major Montgomery County, Maryland, commuter route, according to initial designs for the county’s Bus Rapid Transit system — which will also be the first of its kind in Maryland.

The Washington Post reports the designs for the 11 solar-powered stations that will line Route 29’s BRT line will be finalized next year. Construction is set to start later in 2018, and the line is expected to be up and running by the middle of 2020.

According to the initial designs, columns will show station names, video screens will display the time the next bus should arrive and public art will dress up the stations.

Montgomery County’s 13-and-a-half mile Bus Rapid Transit line along Route 29 will stretch between the Burtonsville Park & Ride lot and the Silver Spring Transit Center.
