Baltimore police training to help K-9s in case of overdose

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police officers are being trained on how to help their K-9 partners in the event of a drug overdose.

WBAL-TV reports that the training is teaching officers how to administer naloxone to their four-legged partners in case they come in contact with drugs on the scene. Naloxone is used to reverse opioid overdoses in humans.

Officers are learning how to spot when a dog is experiencing an overdose, among other things. Several other departments in the area are doing similar training.

Naloxone is administered with a spray up the dog’s nose, as it is with humans. Police already carry the equipment with them.

Office Steve Strum’s K-9 partner is Abu. Strum says he’s glad they’re doing the training because drugs can be “very deadly to a dog.”
